Description: This diagram explains the different kind of mutations and their causes within the genetic code. As the "code of life" it is incredibly important in determining your overall health and phenotype. Major errors can result in diseases such as cancer. Different kinds of modifications within the genetic code are given different names. "Silent" mutations for example switch out a letter but have no impact on the final translated protein. Therefore they are said to have no major impact. Nonsense mutations introduce a STOP codon, cutting the protein short while missense mutations create misfolded proteins. Frameshift mutations have an even larger impact due to the large number of amino acids changed. UV light, X-rays, cigarettes, viruses and many other carcinogens can lead to mutations within the genetic code.
